SU defeats Georgetown in OT; Boeheim earns his 880th win
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Jim Boeheim passed Dean Smith for third on the career coaching wins list with his 880th victory as No. 2/2 Syracuse (24-1, 11-1) defeated No. 12/11 Georgetown (18-5, 8-4) 64-61 in overtime on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Kris Joseph poured in a career-high 29 points and hit a career six three pointers in a game that featured 15 ties and 18 lead changes. The senior also grabbed five rebounds and had three steals. Fab Melo joined Joseph in double figures with 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had six blocks.
After Melo blocked Henry’s Sims jumper on Georgetown’s last possession of regulation, the Orange had a chance win the game, but a three-point attempt from Dion Waiters drew front iron and SU headed into its first overtime of the season.
Joseph added to his career night on SU’s final possession of overtime as he received a pass from Scoop Jardine and hit his sixth three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining which proved to be the game-winner.
The Orange shot 35 percent for the game (22-of-63) and held a 24-22 advantage in the paint. Georgetown was 33 percent from the floor (21-of-63) and outrebounded the Orange 52-35.
