The promised Grey's Anatomy's Cristina and Owen explosion finally happened.
It's the moment that has been building up since Cristina got an abortion earlier this season— though, really, it all goes back to their premature wedding in the Season 7 premiere.
Let's take it back to the beginning of Thursday's episode:
Cristina and Teddy have both been avoiding Owen — for Teddy, it's because he initially lied to her about Henry's death, and for Cristina, it's because she was simply supposed to be off shift already. Cristina has stayed to support Teddy, helping her to steal Alex's surgery and subsequently lying by omission to Owen about it.
Once Owen arrives at Zola's birthday party, the first thing he spies is Cris playing with baby Zola, acting as any godparent would do. Cristina and Teddy stealing Alex's surgery is the least of the issues between them, as he decides to pull Cris off Teddy's service, instead of firing both of them. The fight snowballs, picking up speed and exposing the cracks in the foundation of their marriage. No, this isn't about the surgery at all, but -- as Owen yells for the whole party to hear from the other room -- is about Cristina's decision to kill their baby. Ouch.
While we'll have to wait at least two weeks — the alt-reality episode airs next Thursday — to see the fallout, we can only guess that the cracks have now become huge chasms that Owen and Cristina will not be able to climb their way out of.
In the meantime, let's take a look at some of the top moments from this week's episode:
-Alex is back in the game: His random one-night-stand floozy, whom Meredith would not let touch Zola, is just one of the many small problems creating larger issues for the residents living at Meredith's house. Fortunately, the overcrowded house is about to get some vacancies as Alex, April and Jackson are all moving to a new place. Who else is excited to see the new digs?
-Mark's three words: We'd never expect Mark to say "I love you" offhandedly, but it gives Slexie fans some hope that he's so hesitant to express his love to new girlfriend Julia now that Jackson and Lexie aren't together anymore. Though, he later admits he doesn't want to rush things, so maybe all hope really is lost.
-The Chief's 10,000th surgery: It gets complicated when the Alzheimer's-ridden Adele shows up disoriented, believing Richard has left her for Ellis. April leads her to the OR gallery, where Adele screams down at him, mistaking Meredith, who's also on the surgery, for Ellis. He's able to calm her down by singing "My Funny Valentine," the song that played for their first wedding dance together. Oh those tears! And this is why Loretta Devine won the Emmy.
-Meredith's specialty: She's the only resident who has not chosen one yet, so the race is on to figure out what to do. After nearly everyone suggests being a general surgeon — which is what her mother was famous for — Meredith worries she could be turning into her mother. Her adoption of Zola and how hard she fought to get her back is just one of the many examples why she's nothing like Ellis Grey. It will be interesting to see what Ellis looks like without Alzheimer's in next week's alt-reality episode. Could she be more like Meredith?
What did you think of Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy? Is there hope for Cristina and Owen? Or, unlike the title of the episode, is there no hope for the hopeless?
