The troubled Academy at Ivy Ridge is reportedly closing its doors for good this weekend.
The Ogdensburg private academy, which was geared toward troubled teens will close this weekend and transfer the remaining students to a facility in South Carolina, according to the Daily Courier-Observer this morning.
The Academy, which opened in 2002 at the former Mater Dei College, had seen enrollments drop since 2006 when the State denied it the right to issue diplomas. Several incidents involving break-outs by students, who live on campus and go to class six days a week, as well as assaults and pressure from critics who questioned the disciplinary procedures used by the Academy also may have contributed to its demise.
In 2005, 30 students were expelled after a mass uprising in which staff was attacked, and in 2006 two staff members were charged after allowing a group of students to assault another child, leaving him hospitalized.
School officials have declined comment.
