Massena (WWTI) -- At approximately 11:00am Tuesday morning, State Police Divers recovered the body of John S. Favreau, age 43, of Massena, from the Grasse River in the vicinity of Fregoe Road in the town of Massena.

Police say on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30, Favreau drove his snowmobile onto the frozen Grasse River from the Am Vets Boat Launch with the intention of ice fishing.  Approximately 50 yards from shore, the snowmobile broke through the ice, entering the Grasse River with Favreau still on it.  The water was approximately 15 feet deep and the ice thickness varied from two to four inches in that location.

St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood responded and authorized removal to Massena Memorial Hospital for an autopsy which will be performed later today.

Numerous local and county fire and rescue agencies, along with the St. Lawrence County Dive team and New York State Police Dive Team assisted with this investigation.
