North Country Congressman Bill Owens says he plans on paying back the costs for a trip overseas to Taiwan late last year. The move comes after an online report that the trip, which was primarily organized by a downstate lobbying firm, may have violated ethics rules. The trip last December saw Owens and his wife go overseas to meet with Taiwanese officials to "promote international cultural exchange". Owens has defended the trip as an opportunity to bring high tech jobs to the region and maintains that his office did nothing wrong. However, he says in an abundance of caution and to avoid any future questions about the purpose of the trip, he plans on reimbursing the costs associated.
