Firefighters from several departments managed to save a farm house near Depauville early Wednesday morning.

"Overall, this is a good day for all the fire departments and the homeowner," said Clayton Fire Chief Alan Marceau.

The fire was reported at 4:27 a.m. by the Gerald and Kathryn Wetterhahn family at 13467 County Route 5. All members of the family escaped safely.

An overheated wood stove touched off the fire, with the flames spreading into a large amount of wood stored in the cellar, Chief Marceau said.

Firefighters had to remove about two cords of wood in order to get the flames out and ventilate the house, he said.

There's damage to the first floor and wood beams in the basement, the Chief said.

Fire departments from Clayton, Cape Vincent, Chaumont, Depauville, Lafargeville, Three Mile Bay and Brownville were on scene along with TIERS ambulance.
