Watertown— What began as a celebration of one or more of the early Christian saints Valentinus, February 14th flourished in the Middle Ages as a day to show courtly love.

Today, Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated as a day to remind your significant other how much you still care. However, for individuals who aren’t married, prefer to take the commitment plunge and get hitched.

One local bachelor not only decided to get married, he decided to surprise his girlfriend. Andrew Bugbee brought his girlfriend Christy King to the court house with the confidence that she would accept.

Newlywed Mrs. Bugbee said, "I had no idea what was going on, I thought we were going to dinner with his mother. But, then I sort of started getting suspicious that something was up." The couple tied the knot in a simple ceremony at City Hall. They plan to have a formal wedding sometime next summer.

Every year, 2.2 million people get married on Valentine’s Day, while 10% get engaged nation wide.
