Governor Cuomo signs gun control law: New York to have toughest gun control laws in the US
Albany (WTNY) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law the toughest gun control laws in the nation. The New York State Assembly passed the legislation Tuesday afternoon following the state Senate's approval late Monday. The law would expand the state's existing ban on assault weapons, limit the size of ammunition magazines to seven bullets, and make private gun sales subject to background checks.
Among the North Country's representation in Albany, only one lawmaker was in support of the gun control legislation. Democratic Assemblywoman Addie Jenne Russell voted yes in regards to the legislation. In a statement, Russell praised the legislation for including the Mark's Law provision that increases penalties for those who murder first responders.
Those who voted against the law include Republican Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush and Republican Senators Patty Ritchie and Joe Griffo. Blankenbush called it a rushed measure that does little to protect families from real threats. Ritchie says that while she supports provisions of the plan, she says the new law harms more law abiding citizens than criminals. Griffo meanwhile criticized the speed by which the bill was put together and packaged for vote.
