Watertown -- A Campus Bookstore manager at JCC was arraigned Tuesday in Watertown City Court on charges of Grand Larceny in the 2nd degree, a class C felony, and Falsifying Business Records, a class E felony.
Nancy Lear of Dexter is accused of falsifying textbook returns (buy-backs) to the Campus Bookstore. Police say the amount of money Lear is alleged to have taken is in excess of $50,000.
Ms. Lear’s employment was terminated by the Faculty-Student Association effective December 10th.
“This is an extremely serious and unfortunate situation for any organization to be involved in,” said College president Carole A. McCoy. “However, I’m pleased with the quick action of the Faculty Student Association, the cooperation of all bookstore employees and the assistance of the Watertown City Police Department in the investigation.”
David J. Schissler, executive director of the Faculty-Student Association said, “We have an internal system of checks and balances in place and we are fortunate that the system did exactly what it was supposed to do. A discrepancy with the inventory was first discovered on Friday November 30 by the bookstore’s director of retail operations. Further research in the bookstore’s computer system confirmed the initial discrepancy as well as identified others and the Watertown City Police Department was called to investigate on December 1. At this point forward, the case is in the hands of law enforcement officials to work through the judicial process.”
