Liverpool— According to Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) every two minutes in the United States, someone is sexually assaulted. Every year there are 207,754 victims of rape from the ages of 12 years old and up.

Women are much more prone to getting sexually assaulted or raped. “It is very important that women learn how to defend themselves in case of an attack or God forbid, a rape situation” said Dennis Sugrue, who holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is head MMA coach at Tai Kai. Sugrue went on to explain how some of the key components to self-defense moves, come directly from Jiu Jitsu techniques.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling type of martial arts, which focuses on self-defense and ground combat. In the case of a sexual assault, learning how to get out of a powerless situation, can mean the difference between escaping an attack or potentially getting raped.

There are self-defense classes for women that teach some basic moves. For more intensive training, self-defense can also be learned from various types of martial art studios within your area.
