(WTNY) - National Grid is sending an alert out to it's customers to be weary of a phone scam that seems to be making the rounds.

The utility says in recent weeks, there have been reports of calls made to it's customers asking for personal financial information, such as credit card and banking numbers. Some customers are being told to obtain money orders, pre-paid cards, or other forms of payment to avoid service shut offs.

The utility says it may call and request payment information for customers with previous balances, but the company urges anyone who is uncertain as to the identity of a caller to hang up and verify by contacting National Grid at 1-800-642-4272.
