(WSYR-TV) -- A new law signed by Governor Cuomo on Monday requires that a teen have parental permission before getting a body piercing.

The law is meant to protect teens from infections and disease that could come from piercings.

Body piercing studios will now have to check customer IDs to make sure those they’re piercing are not under 18 years old. A parent will also have to sign a consent form at the studio.

The new law takes effect in 90 days.

According to the Governor’s Office, about 20 percent of all body piercings result in infection.
