A group of North Country residents are gearing up to feature their custom antique cars at the 13th Annual Syracuse Nationals.
This year’s three day event will be held at the New York State Fairgrounds starting on July 20th until the 22nd. Thousands of people from across the country join in on the fun each year, and according to show Director Robert O’Connor this year is expected to be a big one.
North Country resident Mark Devito, a long time custom car owner, will be heading down to the Syracuse Nationals with his 1934 Ford. According to Devito it’s the love of the car culture that keeps him traveling and showing at the Syracuse Nationals each year.
Sherman Tucker will be heading down with his 1955 Chevy Pickup. Last year Tucker showed the 55’ Chevy Pickup and he says there is a special group of people that enjoy the old pickups. He enjoys going down, spending the weekend and talking trucks with his fellow antique car enthusiasts.
Robert Loughery from Brownville will be showcasing his 1917 Ford Model T coupe. Loughery a wood smith custom designed his vehicle to resemble cabinets since that is what he does for a living. He enjoys the Syracuse Nationals each year, and is excited to be featured in the antiques display building this year.
Scott Thomas will be heading to the Syracuse Nationals with this 1979 Poniac Trans Am. Thomas says he loves his care since its straight from his childhood generation and looks forward to showing it off.
A new element at this year’s three-day show is “American Muscle Sunday.” Owners with vehicles newer than 1980 will be allowed to display their specialty cars or trucks at the Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 22.
Chrissy Maguire will be one of the North Country residents heading down to showcase her new car on Sunday. Maguire drives a 2011 Mustang Raush. She enjoys being able to showcase her autographed and custom Mustang, and says its empowering as a woman to have such an opportunity.
Donald Brumsfield will also be taking his newer vehicle down on Sunday. Brumsfield drives a 1996 Mustang that he has customized with a new engine and other features.
In 2011, the Syracuse Nationals attracted more than 7,600 registered vehicles from more than 30 states and five Canadian provinces, and more than 86,000 attendees, making the show the largest on the East Coast and one of the largest in the country.
