Watertown (WTNY/WSYR) -- The National Weather Service still has a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect through 4 this afternoon, mainly over the snow belt area and the Tug Hill with 6 to 12 inches today south of Adams and Lowville.   Snowfall rates of 2-4” per hour have been common in the heat of the lake snow band.  Lake snow is forecast to meander across areas east of Lake Ontario through early afternoon and then drift south this evening.  If you’re driving in this region today plan on rapidly changing conditions, including poor visibility and whiteouts.

If it’s not snow you’re braving today, it will be the cold.  The combination of air temperatures in the low to mid teens combined with winds of 10-25 mph will create wind chill temperatures near or below zero throughout the day.

A Wind Chill Warning will be in effect from midnight tonight to 9 am Wednesday. Lows tonight will be well below zero with wind chill values as low as 35 below zero.

The forecast for through the weekend:

Tonight: Much colder with lows ranging from -15 to -20 across the Tug Hill. 0 to -15 along the Lake Ontario shore. Northwest winds 10 - 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Wind chills will be as low as -35

Wednesday: Partly sunny and cold with highs 5 - 10 above. North winds of 10 mph or less with gusts of up to 30 mph. Windchill -35.

Wednesday night: Mostly Cloudy in the evening with clearing overnight. Cold with lows of -5 to -10.

Thursday: Sunny and cold with highs around 10.

Thursday night: Partly Cloudy. Lows 0 to +5

Friday: Snow likely. Highs 15 - 20.
