ROCHESTER, NY - Firefighters say they tried to rescue children from an early morning fire Saturday, but were forced to back-off after they were met with heavy fire.

Around 1:00 a.m., they were called to the two-story home for rubbish burning outside. But when firefighters got there, they saw flames inside the home.

Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield says they tried to get inside, but had to get out after being enveloped in flames.

Firefighters also tried to get to the second floor with a ladder, but it was too dangerous.

The names and ages of the children are not being released, but the chief says they were in their teens or younger.

A woman and an infant were rescued from the first floor.

Four people were taken to the hospital.

How the fire started is still under investigation.
