Snow showers continue tonight across much of central New York. Most are just seeing light flurries, but squalls are around in areas south of Syracuse. Now that the disturbance is moving through the area, lake effect is beginning to set up with heavy snow over Oswego County. We’re expecting that lake effect should be present over the Tug Hill region as we move towards sunrise.
Conditions aren’t ideal for a static band. Instead, we’ll likely see the most intense snow dropping southward through Monday morning as winds shift to become a bit more northwesterly. Our high resolution computer models suggest that Onondaga and Madison Counties will be included under the snow band as it moves through the morning. Snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour are possible, so visibility may be greatly reduced under the most persistent snow.
Lake effect snow carries on through Monday and into the overnight before finally breaking up early Tuesday morning. Cold air will still be with us as we only reach highs near 20° on Tuesday, but we moderate through the end of the week, rising into the mid 30s. Conditions on the weather map will allow for several clipper-style systems to roll through central New York, bringing chances for widespread snow followed by lake effect throughout the week.
