Montague -- An ATV accident in the Town of Montague has left a Holland Patent man in Critical Condition.

Wednesday afternoon at around 2:15, Lewis County Sheriff's Deputies and Lewis County Search and Rescue responded to a report of an unresponsive, non breathing male. According to witnesses, 48 year old Timothy Cowen was traveling north on the Liberty Road with a group of friends. Cowen was in the process of passing another ATV when, for unknown reasons,  he went of the road, traveled approximately 380 feet before striking a tree limb. The helmet Cowen was wearing was not D.O.T. approved and came off on impact.  After Cowen was ejected from the ATV it flipped several times before coming to a stop in a shallow creek.

Cowen sustained a severe head injury as well as internal injuries. Lewis County Search and Rescue treated Cowen at the scene, he was then flown to Upstate Medical Center where he is listed in Critical Condition.

Police say speed was a contributing factor in the accident and their investigation is on going.
