Alexandria Bay Resident in Custody for Murder, Investigation Continues in Cape Vincent

State Police in Watertown are investigating a homicide that occurred shortly before midnight at 190 South Real Street in Cape Vincent.

Mary I. Burkman, 51, was found to have suffered numerous stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her daughter, Amber S. Englebert, 21, was also found to have suffered stab wounds and is currently being treated at Samaritan Medical Center. Despite serious injuries, Ms. Englebert was able to call 911 to report the attack.

State Police have arrested Mikel R. Odle, 20, of
Alexandria Bay. He is being charged with Second Degree Murder, and attempted Murder.

Odle fled the residence after the attack, taking an 11-month-old infant with him who he had in common with Ms. Englebert. 

Shortly after 12 a.m., the suspect's vehicle was spotted by Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy James Randall southbound on State Route 12E in Chaumont.

The suspect's vehicle crashed after a brief pursuit, and Deputy Randall placed Odle in custody at the scene.

The infant was airlifted to University Hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Odle was treated and released at Samaritan Medical Center and is currently in State Police custody.

Anyone with further information should contact the State Police at Watertown at 315-782-2112. State Police were assisted by the Village of Cape Vincent Police department.
