A young Amish girl was severely burned in a Friday evening fire that destroyed her home in Hammond.

Firefighters were called to the Amish home at 144 Conger Road in Hammond about 9:30 p.m. Amish neighbors told NewsWatch50 the home was that of Dan Swartzentruber, his wife Anna and their children.

A female suffered 3rd degree burns to 70 percent of her body, officials reported. Neighbors told us the girl is Mary Swartzentruber, age 7. She is in a hospital in Syracuse.

The family totals at least eight people, neighbors said.

The fire is believed to have started in a chimney in the girls' bedroom, the neighbors told NewsWatch50.

Hammond firefighters were assisted by those from Brier Hill and Morristown. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I am a 51 yr burn survivor from a furnace explosion at 2 yrs old and I will never understand what people do or not do to their children if they are burned or some other kind of trauma due to their relgious belief. Unless you have been burned yourself you will never ever know what it feels like to get burned. Getting burned is like you cook in a microwave and u cook from the inside out. That is the best that I can describe it. I hope that the girl will be ok but then her life has completely changed her whole life as she knew it. That is so sad! She will be in my prayers. A Caring survivor in Michigan
