Washington (WSYR-TV/ABC News) – A sharply divided Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of a bill banning so-called assault weapons on Thursday.
The committee voted 10-8 in favor of the bill largely along party lines,
according to ABC News.
The bill – sponsored by Senator Diane Feinstein (D-California) – has resemblances to historic legislation recently passed in New York.
It would ban semi-automatic weapons with at least one military feature. It specifically names 157 guns that would be prohibited.
The bill would also ban magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.
An
ABC/Washington Post poll released earlier in the week indicated that 57 percent favored an assault-weapons ban.
