A Brooklyn man pleaded guilty to a weapon charge in Jefferson County Court Monday morning.

Joseph Carmoega, 21, of 1097 Madison Street, Brooklyn entered a plea of guilty to a reduced charge of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree in connection with an incident in 2006.

In court Carmoaga, who has only a 10th grade education and seemed to have a difficult time understanding questions from the judge and the assistant district attorney, admitted to having an unregistered, unlicensed handgun in his possession while in the company of drug dealers during a visit to Watertown in August 2006.

According to information from the archives of the Watertown Daily Times, Carmoega was indicted by a grand jury in November 2008.

The indictment charged Carmoega with Conspiracy 4th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree.

He had been incarcerated at the PSB on $15,000 bail since the indictment.

Following his court appearance this morning, Carmoega was released on his own recognizance pending sentencing on March 16th.
