A chance meeting on a rural road led to two acquaintances getting a little closer than they intended.

State Police say Dan Ashlaw of Canton and 18 year old Casey Spiak of Heuvelton met one another as they drove in opposite directions on the Irish Settlement Road in Canton.
As they recognized each other, both slowed, stopped and backed up so they could chat.

Unfortunately, Ashlaw's 2008 Dodge Charger backed into the path of Spiak's 1996 Ford Explorer and the two vehicles collided.

Ashley and a back seat passenger, Tashia Roi, also 18, refused treatment for minor cuts from flying glass.

A 15 year old back seat passenger in the Charger was treated by Canton Rescue and released to her mother. Two other passengers in Ashlaw's vehicle were not injured.

Ashlaw was ticketed for failure to keep right and having a rear seat passenger age 7-15 with no seat belt.
