On the midday weather map, a trough of low pressure is pulling east into New England with high pressure centered over Lake Erie. Strengthening low pressure is centered over the south-central Plains States with Blizzard conditions for some and severe weather for other
Although it may be a slow process, clearing skies should take hold later in the day and at night tonight as high pressure moves closer to central New York. It is such a slow process partly because the winds are so light and that makes it harder to ‘mix’ out the moisture in the lower atmosphere. By tomorrow morning, high pressure is forecast to be positioned over extreme northern Maine and is projected to continue to move east and set up shop near the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia boarder. This should result in a decent Tuesday as sun fades behind increasing afternoon clouds.
The clouds will be in advance of our next weather maker, the previously mentioned low over the south-central Plain States. This storm is forecast to move from its present location to the Mid-Atlantic and northern Ohio regions by early Wednesday morning. On this trajectory, we should remain dry during daylight tomorrow, however, by sunset we can’t assure dry weather as rain and snow will be close to Central New York.
What falls from the sky Tuesday night into Wednesday night and Thursday will largely depend on the temperature at the ground as well as the temperature a few thousand feet above the ground. Computer models aren’t on the same page on this important issue, making for a less confident forecast than normal. Right now, we anticipate a mix of rain, snow and possibly ice to fall. Where snow is the primary form of precipitation (especially higher elevations) , there could be several inches of accumulation Tuesday night.
Once this storm arrives it will be in no hurry to leave. We have unsettled conditions for the rest of the week and into the beginning of the weekend not only in central New York but also into the Northeast. You can expect plenty of clouds, below normal temperatures and some snow.
