Some tweaks have been made to the proposed budget for Jefferson County, and the changes bring some good news for taxpayers.

The legislative Finance and Rules Committee Wednesday night agreed to cut in half the proposed tax levy increase. When the budget was released last week, it stood at 4.4%. That has now shrunk to 2.2%. The tax rate will still increase, but not by as much as initially proposed. The current rate is $6.37 per $1000 of assessed value. That will now go up by 6 cents under the proposal. Initially it would have increased 19 cents.

The budget will be the focus of a public hearing and will likely be passed by the full board of legislators next Tuesday.
