A freak hail storm in St. Lawrence County may have wiped out fields of corn and soybeans.
Among hardest hit were fields near State Route 68 east of Flackville.
Steve Canner of Cornell Cooperative Extension was headed there Monday morning to check out the damage.
Infant corn stalks in one field had been beaten and broken by the ice. Whether they can recover is in question.
"If it (the corn) is not too big, it may be able to," says Canner. "When it gets to a certain size, it probably won't."
Vehicle damage from the hail storm was also reported.
One Lisbon man said an accumulation of ice was still visible on the ground a half hour after the hail stopped falling.
