The first-ever Great Lakes Seaway Trail VolksWalk combined history and modern day fitness in Sackets Harbor this past Saturday.

The War of 1812-themed event included costumed interpreters and leisure walking enthusiasts from Canada, the 1000 Islands, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and Buffalo/Niagara Falls regions.

Walkers had a choice of 5k and 10k distances. Those who missed the inaugural event can pick up maps at the Ontario Place Hotel in Sackets Harbor.

New walker kits cost $5, an A award is $5, and a stamp to qualify for International Volkssporting Association credit is $3.

Future Great Lakes Seaway Trail War of 1812 VolksWalks are planned for  Erie, PA; and Buffalo, Youngstown, Oswego, Sackets Harbor, and Ogdensburg.
