Former Pitcairn Town Surpervisor charged with embezzlement
Pitcairn (WTNY) -- The former Town Supervisor for Pitcairn has been officially charged with embezzlement.
Thirty nine year old Susan Smith is accused of embezzling over $35,000 from the town as well as attempting to cover up the thefts. The charges are included in an indictment that was unsealed Monday and follows a 2011 state audit. Smith is alleged to have stolen the money from 2008 through the end of 2009. Investigators say she made unauthorized payments to herself and others from town accounts at Community Bank NA where she served as a branch manager. She then allegedly submitted false documents when the New York State Comptroller's Office began it's audit of town finances.
The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of two and third to seven years.
