An overnight fire in the Town of Hammond has left two people injured and homeless as fire crews from Morristown, Brier Hill, Lisbon, Heuvelton, Redwood, Theresa and Plessis, as well as the Hammond Rescue Squad battled bitter cold temperatures trying to extinguish the blaze.

The fire, at 799 Highway 37, in the town of Hammond was called in at 2:45am after the occupants of the residence escaped the burning home by jumping out of a second story window and alerted their next door neighbors to call 911.

The couple living at the residence was taken to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. Rachel Brenno suffered contusions to the back, hands and feet. Ryan Peretta suffered burns to the back, hands and head and an injury to his right hand. The family dog did not survive the blaze.

The home was equipped with smoke detectors however, the occupants said they did not hear them. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
