Update: State Police report that Sharlow underwent surgery for removal of a slug from his abdomen.

A Norwood man was shot and seriously injured in a hunting accident early Thursday.

Canton State Police investigators say that 43 year old Ricky Brunelle of Ellenburg Depot fired a round from his .50 caliber muzzle-loader at 38 year old Bernard Sharlow of Potsdam.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. on a parcel of land Brunelle was renting off County Route 35 in Potsdam.

Investigators said Brunelle couldn't see Sharlow when he fired, but thought he was a deer.

Sharlow, struck in the abdomen, was carried from the woods by other hunters. He was taken by ambulance to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, then transferred by ambulance to Fletcher-Allen in Burlington.

Brunelle, a state corrections officers, was arrested late Thursday morning on a count of 2nd degree assault.

He was released into custody of the county probation department.
