An injured driver escaped from her burning car just before it was engulfed in flames, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Department.

Heather Matuszczak, 19, of Port Leyden, went off a curve of the Lyons Falls Road in Lyonsdale early Friday evening, deputies said.

Her 1999 Plymouth Breeze hit a tree head-on and caught on fire.

Ms. Matuszczak managed to get out of the car just before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Rescue crews took her to Lewis County General Hospital for treatment of  back, neck and knee pain.

Deputies said unsafe speed and wet roads were main contributing factors in the accident.
