Watertown (WTNY) -- Jefferson County legislators are one step closer to hiring an outside investigator to look into the handling of at least one recent issue involving a member of the Sheriff's Department.

The Board of Legislators held a closed door session Tuesday night to discuss the recent controversies within the department. Sheriff John Burns was reportedly in attendance to present his findings to the board in regards to the issue of Deputy Adam Hallett, who was found sleeping in his patrol car off duty back on December 1. He was later charged with having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Burns conducted his own investigation into the matter.

Another meeting is planned, at which point the board could vote on the resolution requesting an outside investigation.
