(Nathan Lehman WTNY) -- Jefferson County may soon have a law on the books to deal with the increased use of bath salts in the area.

The county legislature's Health and Human Services Committee Tuesday night approved a new local law to toughen penalties for those who sell and use synthetic drugs. Under the proposed law, those who violate the law would face up to a year in prison and a thousand dollar fine. The full board of legislators is expected to vote on the proposal in the near future. Communities across the country had stiffened local laws to try to discourage the use of synthetic drugs.

New York State is going after a number of head shops for violating the state's labeling laws.
