On this morning’s weather map, an arctic cold front or leading edge to arctic air, is on our doorstep just north of Lake Ontario. Along and ahead of the front, lake effect snow is streaming off the Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario. As the front sags south, it will push the lake snow band from the North Country early this morning to the Syracuse area/Thruway corridor sometime before midday.
The most snow is likely to fall over central and northern Oswego County, including the Tug Hill region (please refer to our snowfall accumulation map). However, for most of us, luckily the lake snows won’t stay over one place for very long. The best bet for snow in the Syracuse area will be from late morning through to early afternoon.
As the snow contracts to the west and south this afternoon, temperatures will drop into teens and single digits as the arctic cold front sags toward the NY/PA boarder. In fact, if skies can clear, temperatures will likely dip near or below zero tonight. Expect the coldest temperatures north and east of Syracuse where lows could end up well below zero.
Our weather turns out quiet Thursday but another system, a cold front, will approach late in the day with clouds and flurries possible before sunset. As this front tries to move through Friday we will be candidates for some more lake effect snow showers.
Starting later in the weekend and especially next week, the seasonably cold air that is over us now will be ready to depart and head back north into Canada. That means we could be in for extended period of above normal temperatures as our air will be of Pacific Ocean origin as opposed to Canada. The stretch of milder air could last well into the extended forecast period.
