A town of LeRay man says he probably won’t be going out for drinks again anytime in the near future.

According to 32-year-old Norris J. MacCue, the painful wounds on his body were inflicted when he was attacked outside an Evans Mills restaurant Tuesday night, sometime after 11:00 p.m.

In an interview with NewsWatch50 Thursday morning Mr. MacCue said he was assaulted when he stepped outside the Last Call restaurant where he was having drinks with his brother and sister.

“I had my back turned and someone hit me over the head with something,” MacCue said. “I think it was a beer bottle. I had glass in my hair and I got a few cuts on the top of my head. After that I went dark.”

MacCue believes his assailants stabbed and kicked him when he fell to the ground.

When he stood up MacCue said the people who came to his aid, including his siblings, immediately told him he was bleeding and to lie down.

MacCue was transported to Samaritan Medical Center by Fort Drum Ambulance.

At SMC twenty-eight stitches were required to close the three wounds on MacCue’s torso – one on his upper back, one on his side and one on his lower back.

Mr. MacCue thinks the attack may have been the result of at least one of three other patrons at the bar being offended by the t-shirt he was wearing.

The shirt was emblazoned with “Italian Mafia.”

MacCue said there was some discussion concerning the shirt and that he explained to the other patrons he was of Irish descent, not Italian.

A person who told NewsWatch50 he was at the scene of the incident, but declined to be identified, disputes Mr. MacCue’s description of the altercation, saying he believed MacCue was struggling on the ground with a man when he rolled on to a broken bottle.

Sheriff John Burns said Thursday the incident is being investigated as an assault. The detective in charge of the investigation was not available for comment.

The owner of the restaurant declined to comment on the incident.

Mr. MacCue said he worries about another attack.

"I haven't been sleeping," MacCue said.
