An elderly man from Oneida County was killed in an ATV accident this afternoon in the Town of Montague.
According to Lewis County Sheriff's deputies, 71-year-old Howard J. Kirk Jr. of Skinner Road, Lee Center was riding an ATV in a swampy area off Olin Road in the Town of Montague at around 3 pm when the ATV flipped over, pinning Kirk in the water beneath it.
Kirk's son was able to remove him from the water within a few minutes. Sheriff's deputies and NYS Forest Rangers who were nearby responded and attempted to revive Kirk, but were unsuccessful.
Kirk was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant District Attorney Caleb Petzoldt.
