Mexico— When you think of winter sports, you probably think of skiing, snowboarding, or sledding. However, dog sledding is a popular, competitive sport.

Owner of Pawpower Pet Supply in Mexico, New York, Rob Worden is also a 13-year dog sledding veteran. Mr. Worden has trained 22 of his Alaskan Husky/Pointer Hound dogs, bred and trained for racing. According to Mr. Worden, training sled dogs for racing begins just a few short weeks after birth. Worden and his team of sled dogs raced in last year’s, Fur Rendezvous in Anchorage, Alaska.

Fur Rendezvous is a World Championship dog sledding competition, which Worden and his athletic team of dogs will be competing in this year. Mr. Worden is also competing in the International World Championships in North Pole, Alaska, which is like the Olympics.

Although, dog sledding is not for the weak at heart, Mr. Worden loves it, “I’ve been doing this for 13 years. I’ve placed 6th and 7th internationally, two different years, in a three-dog class. It’s directed my children and where they’ve went in life. It’s a great family sport.”
