Henderson Harbor— Last winter was considered a “non-winter” for most North Country locals.

Approximately 3-6 inches of snowfall is expected through Wednesday night and so with so much snow, Henderson Harbor has had no problem icing over. “Last year there were a lot of disappointed ice fishermen” said Frank Harnois, 40-year ice fisherman veteran.

“Some people loved that we basically had no winter last year” said Mr. Harnois, “there was no ice last year, so there was no ice fishing.” Harnois explained that ice fishing is an enjoyable past time, but not for the faint of heart. Most ice fishermen bundle up in their make shift fishing huts and remain out in below zero weather for days.

According to Mr. Harnois, ice fishing at Henderson Harbor usually consists of catching yellow perch. However, there have been bigger game fish such as walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and bass. Harnois reported that a few weeks ago, someone caught a 10 pound brown trout. “You never know what's out here” said Harnois, “that’s fishing. You might catch a perch, but you might end up with a big game fish.”
