A black bear was illegally shot and killed in St. Lawrence County on Friday, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Benny A. Haywood, 29, Tupper Lake, is charged with taking a bear during closed season, using an artificial light and criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned and remanded to St. Lawrence County jail without bail.

Haywood allegedly shot a bear that entered his campsite, using one shot from a shotgun with slug ammunition.

The bear was then skinned and butchered and the carcass dumped at another location, DEC officials allege.

As a convicted felon, Haywood is not allowed to possess any firearm, officials said.
