An area of low pressure is forecast to form along a stalled frontal boundary to our south over the Ohio Valley later today and is projected to move into Pennsylvania by early tomorrow morning. In response to this low, steadier rain is forecast to re-develop tonight over central New York and persist into the start of tomorrow. By early evening tomorrow, the low is forecast to be centered just west of Boston. As a result, colder air will filter back into the region and may even change the rain to snow later in the day tomorrow…especially over higher elevations. However, since most of the steadier precipitation will be gone by the time it gets cold enough for snow, we aren’t expecting much in the way of accumulation.
Snow showers are possible to start Wednesday; however, we should manage to at least some limited sun Wednesday afternoon as drier air briefly works into the region. Another storm is forecast to take aim on the region Thursday. Right now, we’re targeting later Thursday for the arrival of the rain.
Thereafter, the forecast becomes more unclear.
We are reasonably confident that the low pressure system, responsible for rain later Thursday, will move into northern New England by evening. Much colder air moving in on the backside of the storm will likely change rain to snow with some accumulating snowfall possible. Then, the low is forecast to slowly meander in New England and off the Northeast coast. With cold and moist air circulating around the storm and over Lake Ontario, the potential exists for accumulating snow in Central New York Friday night and into the weekend. Additionally, brisk and potentially strong wind will make for lower wind chill temperatures.
It’s still rather early, but overall, the end of the work week and upcoming weekend has the potential to rather wintry…just in time as we officially welcome the start of winter on Friday. Be sure to check back for updates as details may change.
