A Lewis County woman's minivan crashed into several tree stumps and caught fire last night, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say 45 year old Mattie Zehr lost control of the vehicle on a snow-covered sharp curve along the Long Pond Road in Croghan about 10:30 p.m.

The minivan went off the road and hit several tree stumps. Moments later it started smoking and burst into flames.

The flames destroyed the engine compartment and also reached into the passenger area before being doused by Croghan fire volunteers.

Ms. Zehr exited the vehicle safely.
