A grand jury has upped the murder counts against Fort Drum soldier Joshua Hunter.

Originally charged with 2nd degree murder, Hunter now faces a 16-count indictment including two counts of murder 1st degree.

He's accused of stabbing two friends - Specialists Waide James and Diego Valbuena - to death in an apartment near Evans Mills in late November.

The indictment says Hunter stabbed both men multiple times in the head, neck and body with an unspecified sharp instrument.

Other counts in the indictment include grand larceny for allegedly stealing Valbuena's credit card and 2005 Ford Explorer, apparently as he fled the murder scene to Ohio.

Several other counts relate to an incident with Hunter's wife, Emily, between June and October.

He allegedly held her on a bed with a knife to her neck, held her head under water in a bathtub and chased her with a knife.

Hunter was apprehended in Ohio shortly after the bodies of James and Valbuena were discovered.

He's an MP with the 3rd Brigade Combat team and returned from deployment in May, 2009.

James and Valbuena were both motor transport operators with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion.
