One hundred fifteen registered sex offenders in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties have been purged from two social networking sites, says Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
Facebook identified and disabled the accounts of 2,782 registered sex offenders state wide and MySpace, 1,796, the A.G. said.
The action comes under the state's new Electronic Securing and Targeting of Online Predators Act (e-STOP).
E-STOP requires registered sex offenders to register all of their e-mail addresses, screen names and other Internet identifiers with police.
The information is then made available to social networking sites so they can purge the offenders from accounts.
The purges include 58 in Jefferson County, 57 in St. Lawrence and six in Lewis County.
