Maj. General Michael Oates' next assignment will be to head up an anti-IED group, the Department of Defense announced.
The former 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum commander has also been nominated to receive a third star, making him a Lt. General.
Oates would replace Lt. General Thomas Metz as commander of the Joint IED Defeat Organization.
The nomination needs confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
