What a difference a year makes when it comes to the flu in Jefferson County.

Last year was a light one, with the first case of the season reported in March. Now, there are hundreds of cases...and they are earlier than normal. Jefferson County Public Health says at least 300 cases have been confirmed so far this year, months ahead of the traditional peak of the season. The first cases were confirmed in the Carthage area in mid-October.

Public health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated. That is ages six months and up. Doctor's offices and most pharmacies have the vaccine available.
