A raccoon killed last week in the Town of Martinsburg has tested positive for the rabies virus.

According to the Lewis County Public Health Agency, on January 7th a Town of Martinsburg resident discovered an injured raccoon near their home that came into contact with their dog. The resident killed the raccoon and submitted it for testing.

The dog was current on its shots and required only a rabies booster. The resident did not require any treatment.

County residents are reminded that all dogs, cats, and ferrets 3 months of age and older must be vaccinated. A vaccination clinic will be held January 24th at Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville. A $10 donation is suggested to help reduce the cost of the clinic.

Anyone wishing further information can call Lewis County Public Health at 376-5453, or visit their website.
