Retailers deciding to open up on Thanksgiving getting mixed reviews
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Last minute stuffing and pumpkin pie may not be the only thing you head to the store for on Thanksgiving this year.
Some big-name retailers are opening earlier than ever before for Black Friday, but the decision is getting mixed reviews.
“My friends are really excited because now they can just get things done and sleep on Friday and not worry about all the other fools out there,” said shopper Pamela Hipius.
Kmart is opening at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving. It’ll temporarily close at 4 p.m. before reopening again at 8 p.m. – about the same time Walmart and Sears get in on the action, followed by Target and Toys ‘R Us at 9 p.m.
Macy’s, Kohls, Best Buy and Destiny USA have announced they’ll be opening at midnight.
And while some are excited about the early openings, others argue it’s a day to focus on family.
"That's the best thing in life they have. Instead of shopping with strangers that they don't even know in the store,” said Vincent Baltrusitis who says he won’t be doing any shopping on Thanksgiving.
And let’s not forget the employees that may have to skip dessert.
Allie Viscone works at Kmart. She says she’d rather be with family on Thanksgiving, but it is what it is.
“I’ll probably be working and I’ll be swamped with customers. It’s not really what I want to happen, but it’s fine,” she said.
“It’s family. Thanksgiving is family. Everyone should be off with family and get together and have a good time, have a good meal and have a few drinks here and there, that’s it. That’s what it’s for,” Baltrusitis continued.
Target’s decision to open on Thanksgiving has led to several online petitions. One of those such petitions was started by a California Target employee on Change.org. At last check, the petition had 174,176 signatures.
