A low pressure system currently centered over the Great Lakes is the driving force for our weather today, and will be for next several days. It should be tracking down towards central New York, introducing rain. We’re watching waves of rain enter the Syracuse area all day, some of which will have embedded heavy downpours and the chance for thunderstorms.
In terms of timing, the best shot at seeing rain today will be from the late morning through the afternoon. The relatively warm Lake Ontario could help fire up some thunderstorm activity close to the shore, and while it’s looking like nearly anywhere could see a thunderstorm or two, the best chance should be in the Tug Hill region. Temperatures aloft are looking to be chilly enough to introduce a small threat for hail I the more developed showers. By this evening, rain should become less widespread and more isolated.
From there, the atmosphere gets a bit backed up. A blocking system forms over the entirety of the country, preventing the low pressure system from escaping out of our reach. Early in the week, showers should be more numerous during the daytime hours. As the blocking pattern breaks down, showers should become less and less likely as week continues. We’re looking at temperatures holding on the cool side, close to 70° nearly all week long.
