It was a box of doughnuts with a message for Rep. John McHugh in Watertown on Friday.

Although McHugh wasn't there, local AARP reps went to his Washington Street office for a doughnut hole demonstration.

They handed over a box of doughnut holes to McHugh's office staff, a protest of a so-called "doughnut hole" in Medicare coverage.

The "hole," which has existed for years, cuts off Medicare funding for prescription medications after a certain level of benefits in any given year.

Seniors then have to pay the next couple thousand dollars out of their own pocket before reaching another tier where Medicare coverage kicks in again.

"Some people are going without their medications," because they can't pay out-of-pocket, said Nina Hershey, President of the Watertown chapter of AARP.

Local AARP chapters around the county participated in this morning's "doughnut hole" protest she said.

While Rep. McHugh wasn't on hand to spell out his position on the issue, "he's a good congressman and I know he'll support us," Hershey said.

Also participating in the demonstration was Betty Redden, the Vice President of the local chapter.
