Hundreds of credit and debit card numbers were stolen in December at the Canton Wisebuys store, according to Canton Village Police.

The stolen numbers were used to make fake cards, which were used to make thousands of dollars in purchases in New York City and its surrounding area.

"We have several hundred victims," said Sgt. Lori McDougal.

She said the bogus cards were used for purchases including gasoline, restaurant meals, taxi rides and pharmaceuticals. The highest purchase seen so far was about $2,500, she said.

In most cases, the card companies or banks have reimbursed the victims, McDougal said.

The fraud began to surface in early March as the debit and credit card statements arrived and were reviewed by the victims.

McDougal said New York City Police have made several arrests for use of the stolen numbers. However, it's believed the bogus cards are the work of a ring, and there are probably some who haven't been caught.

Wisebuys has been cooperative in the investigation, McDougal said. She said it's possible the stolen numbers could lead to local arrests.
