A cold front continues to move east toward central New York this afternoon. All of the region can expect to have lighter snow showers as the front approaches. As the front moves east and south, west to southwest winds will develop and increase this afternoon. In response, steadier, heavier lake effect snow showers will develop between Oswego and Watertown this afternoon.
By early evening, winds will shift into a west to west-northwest direction. Consequently, lake effect snow will be farther south and affect areas along and south of Rte. 104. By mid-evening, lake effect flurries and squalls should move farther south into the Thruway/Syracuse areas.
It’s likely most, if not all, of the accumulating snow that falls by 7 pm this evening will be north of Rte. 31 where 1-4” may fall. After 7 pm this evening, most of the snow accumulations will likely be along and south of Rte. 31 where 1-4” may fall. It should be noted that if lake effect snow behaves and moves in an unexpected way, then snowfall accumulations would be different.
Lake effect will weaken late tonight and quickly shift north of Syracuse Thursday morning. Another weak front should move south Thursday evening and night, which may bring another round of snow showers.
The passage of that cold front will likely set the stage for a rather chilly day Friday. By Friday evening, warmer air arriving above the ground will trigger clouds and probably some widespread light snow. This will signal a change in the weather pattern in the East, one that will lead to above normal temperatures for the end of the weekend into early next week. By Sunday, and especially Tuesday next week, we wouldn’t be surprised to see our temperatures rise back into the 50s.
